Comptroller Tom Dinapoli and New York AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento Rally with Westchester Workers in Support of Senator’s Primary Campaign
New York State’s top labor unions have endorsed Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins for re-election to the State Senate’s 35th District. Senator Stewart-Cousins is running in the primary election on Thursday September 13th. She is also the Democratic Leader of the New York State Senate.
At a rally Thursday at the Westchester Putnam Central Labor Body headquarters, labor leaders, elected officials and dozens of workers gathered in support of Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins then took to the streets to knock on doors on her behalf. New York State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli and New York State AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento were among the speakers at the event expressing their support for the Senator.
“At a time when labor is under attack, it is critically important to have someone like Andrea Stewart-Cousins protecting the rights of working men and women. She has always supported the ideals of organized labor, understanding the needs and concerns of working people. She fought for paid family leave and increases in the minimum wage. And, when it comes to fighting for her constituents, no one has done more than Andrea to secure funding for infrastructure, our schools, the city and county. We are proudly campaigning on her behalf to ensure Andrea Stewart-Cousins is re-elected as State Senator for the 35th Senate District,” said New York State AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement from the AFL-CIO and from so many other outstanding organizations that are leading the labor movement here in New York State. My father was a proud union member and it was thanks to the opportunities that organized labor provided to him that I can serve as the State Senator for the 35th District and as the first woman leader in the history of our State’s Legislature. That’s why I have been such a champion for working men and women, whether its protecting the right to organize, raising the minimum wage, or creating New York’s paid family leave program. But at this critical crossroads in our state and nation, we cannot rest on the accomplishments of the past especially in the face of attacks like the recent Janus decision. Instead, we need to take actions that protect workers such as improving wage standards and working conditions. That’s what I will continue to do as the State Senator for the 35th district, and come next year, as the Majority Leader of the New York State Senate,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
