Democratic Yonkers City Officials Endorse Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins

Mayor Spano, Council President Khader and all Democratic City Councilmembers Cite Senator’s Record of Delivering for Yonkers

(Yonkers) – New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate Democratic Conference Leader, received endorsements from City of Yonkers Mayor Michael Spano, Yonkers City Council President Michael Khader and every Democratic member of the Yonkers City Council. In their endorsements, the Democratic city officials cited Senator Stewart-Cousins’ record of delivering for Yonkers as reasons for their support.

Senator Stewart-Cousins, a Yonkers resident for more than 39 years, represents the 35th Senate District, which encompasses about half of the City. The district also encompasses about half of the City of New Rochelle, three quarters of the City of White Plains, the Town of Greenburgh and the town/village of Scarsdale. Prior to her election to the State Senate in 2006, Ms. Stewart-Cousins represented Yonkers as a Westchester County Legislator.

Senator Stewart-Cousins will be on the ballot in the primary election on Thursday September 13.

“I would like to thank my colleagues in the City of Yonkers for their endorsements. This City has been my home since 1979 and I have represented it for the last twenty-six years, whether as the City’s Director of Community Affairs, as a County Legislator or as the State Senator. Throughout my tenure as State Senator, I have delivered massive increases in state education funding to support the district’s 27,000 students and have been a tireless advocate on behalf of all city residents. I have secured millions of dollars to rebuild our crumbling schools, directed massive investments in the City’s parks and infrastructure including the Saw Mill Daylighting project and have consistently come through with needed funding to help the City and school district stave off devastating cuts to services and personnel. I look forward to continuing to serve this City in partnership with my colleagues Mayor Mike Spano, Council President Khader and the members of the Yonkers City Council,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

“Throughout her time in the State Senate, Andrea Stewart-Cousins has been a true champion for the City of Yonkers and its residents. Now, more than ever, we need strong leaders in the State Capitol who will fight for working families, increase aid for education and continue to protect our environment. I’m proud to endorse Senator Stewart-Cousins and look forward to working with her in the future,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

“Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins has been a consistent leader and fighter for the hard-working families of Yonkers. We need her expertise and dedication in Albany and right here at home to help solve the many issues facing our city. I am proud to call Senator Stewart-Cousins a friend and look forward to working together into the future,” said City Council President Mike Khader.

“I strongly endorse Andrea Stewart-Cousins for reelection as State Senator for the 35th district. She is the most experienced candidate and a proven leader. Sen. Stewart-Cousins shares my values. She is a longtime advocate for social justice issues, voting rights, gender and racial equality. I urge you to vote for Senator Stewart-Cousins on Thursday Sept 13th,” said City Councilman Michael Sabatino.

“Senator Stewart-Cousins recognizes that Yonkers is treated unfairly by NY State’s education formula. As a result she has been an extraordinary advocate for Yonkers. Just this year, she was instrumental in securing state funding to help the city school district avoid layoffs. Time and again, Senator Stewart-Cousins has delivered for her constituents in this city. I wholeheartedly endorse her for re-election,” said City Councilwoman Shanae Williams.

“As a Councilwoman in Yonkers, I have learned about the importance of partnerships. Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins is one of the best partners we have. Yonkers has encountered many challenging budgets, budgets that we were able to balance year after year because our Senator continued to deliver record funding for our Public Schools. Yonkers and our public schools need Senator Cousins fighting for us in Albany,” said City Councilwoman Corazon Pineda.
